Rotterdam

The port of Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe, covering 105 square kilometers and stretches over a distance of 40 kilometers. It consists of the city center’s historic harbor area westwards towards the reclaimed Maasvlakte area, which projects into the North Sea.

Legero International (Holland) is located in the port of Rotterdam just minutes away from Rotterdam airport and less than 40 minutes from Amsterdam Schiphol airport.

Our unique location and our in-house facilities not only make it possible to arrange onboard deliveries at almost every northern European port in just hours, having our daily airport shuttles directly from our warehouse vice versa makes us the ideal hub location for Europe.

History

In December 1988 Leo, Gerrie and Robert Plune founded Legero Courier Services. Three brothers with one and the same dream to built their own company. With a single rental truck, a small room at the founder’s residence and a ‘No problem attitude’ a forwarding company came to life.

Around-the-clock availability, dedication and high quality service quickly resulted in rapid growth. Within 2 years Legero became a well-known company in the port of Rotterdam respected by both customers as well as the competition. The small room was soon exchanged for an industrial building with a ‘real’ office and storage facilities. The rental truck was now owned and the fleet of trucks expanded to twenty.

As a result of the excellent services provided, the very competitive rates and the punctual deliveries, many local ship handlers started hiring Legero for delivery of their spares and stores to vessels within the European ports. Trough the years that followed Legero developed as specialists in this particular field and regular A to B deliveries remained hardly ever the case. By now 90% of the customers where active in the shipping industry: ship chandlers, technical supply companies, yards, workshops and ship’s agents.

Frequently visiting the vessels themselves, the founders easily made contact with the superintendents and port captains on board. By their request Legero started working for ship owners and managers directly and it was soon decided to change the name into Legero International (Holland) BV.

To increase flexibility and expand our specialization, an application for a special arrangement was filed with the local customs, the so-called bonded warehouse type Csum. Examinations by various authorities lead to this application to be granted in 1991 and we became one of the first forwarding companies in Rotterdam having an independent operating bonded warehouse, authorized to receive and dispatch bonded shipments without any interference of the local customs. Consignment, both bonded and free could be stored in the same warehouse and were available to the clients 24 hours a day, 7 day’s a week.

Meanwhile due to the continuously increasing demands for air and sea freight all necessary arrangement where made to provide this services. Specialists in this particular line of business were hired and staff was trained.

Adding air & sea freight services made no exception to our company policy. In contradiction to our competitors, orders are not distributed to the various departments but arranged by the appointed account team. This improves flexibility and prevents the client from being transferred between various departments in order to retrieve information or provide instructions.

To distinguish our selves even further and provide value added services towards our clients, investments were made and we started the development of our in-house Legero software system which included an online ‘stock report’. This system provides round-the-clock information to our clients.

Today, twenty years after the establishment of our company we have offices and warehouse facilities in Rotterdam, Athens, Hamburg, Houston and Singapore, a fleet of trucks, own barges, hub locations on all the continents and a sophisticated network of worldwide agents. Business plans are being developed for future expansions into Scandinavia, Dubai, Hong Kong as well as China.

A lot has changed. Except one thing; the ‘No problem attitude’. It’s still there.

“Celebration Day of Fastingâ€

When do we celebrate?

Our Greek office will be closed on Friday October 28th to celebrate Epetios Tou Ochi.

What do we celebrate?

On the 28th of October in 1940 the Italian Government asked from Greece to surrender to them. The Greek Governor (METAXAS) gave them a negative answer (it is known as the Greek “NO†to the Italians) and this was the cause for the Greek-Italian war to begin.

Oslo

Norway has been a major player in shipping for 150 years. This small country on the fringe of Europe, with less than a thousandth of the world’s population, is a superpower on the seas, controlling 5 per cent of the world’s merchant fleet.

What’s more, the numerous and varied maritime activities that have grown up around traditional shipping operations enjoy strong and, in many instances, leading positions in the international market. This together with its leading offshore and exploration industry made us decide to open the Scandinavian office in Oslo with strong ambitions to expand and establish satellite offices in Stavanger and Bergen.

Legero International (Norway) A/S is located on the largest international airport in Norway, Oslo Gardermoen, about 50km north of Oslo.

Holiday Notice: Chinese New Year 2012

Year of the Dragon

Kung Hei Fat Choi

Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is the most important traditional festival in China. It begins on the first day of the first lunar month (usually in late January or early February) and ends on the 15th day of the first lunar month (Lantern Festival).

When?

The New Year festival will start from January 22nd (Chinese New Year' Eve) and end on February 6th (Lantern Festival).

Who celebrates?

Spring festival is an official holiday in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau and is also observed as an official holiday in Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam.

Did you know?

Since ancient times, the Chinese New Year was considered as the time to honor ancestors and heavenly deities. In addition, it was the time to organize family gatherings and grand feasts.

There is a legend associated with the celebration of New Year in China. There was a monster named Nian who used to harass the villagers by eating their crops, cattle and taking away their kids. The villagers had no other option but to place food at the entrance to their homes so that the monster would eat it and go away without harming them.

One day, the villagers realized that the monster was scared of red color. So, they adorned their doors and windows with red paper cutouts and spring scrolls. The villagers also burst crackers to frighten the monster. Since then, Nian never came again to the village. Hongjun Laozu, a Taoist monk, was the one who captured the beast later on. Since then, the Chinese have been celebrating the capture of Nian on their New Year's Day.

There are other stories which say that the Chinese have observed their New Year since the reign of the sage emperors, Sun and Yao. The Western Zhou Dynasty observed New Year as the time when they would begin their agricultural activities. This event was also celebrated with ceremonial gatherings and fireworks by the Han Dynasty. The Song Dynasty, too, observed this special occasion with bamboo poles and fireworks.

Chinese New Year is celebrated with fireworks, lion dancing, dragon dancing and cultural performances on the street. Families organize reunion dinners on New Year's Eve and make special preparations like spring rolls and Chinese dumplings. Offering gifts of money is also a popular tradition followed during this festival.

Our Singapore office will be closed on Saturday 21st til Wednesday 25th.

Schengen Visa has made traveling between its 15 European member countries much easier and less bureaucratic. It is issued to citizens of countries who are required to obtain a visa before entering Europe.

The purpose of the visit must be leisure, tourism, or business. Upon the issuance of the visa, the visa holder is allowed to enter all member countries and travel freely throughout the Schengen area. It is strongly recommended to plan your journey within the timeframe of the Schengen Visa as extensions can be very difficult to obtain, thus forcing you to leave to stay in compliance with the Schengen rules and regulations. A Schengen visa allows the holder to travel freely within the Schengen countries for a maximum stay of up to 90 days in a 6 month period.

All Schengen countries are in Europe. However, it should not be confused with the EU (European Union). Schengen and European Union are two different agreements between European countries. A total of 30 countries, including all European Union countries (except Ireland and United Kingdom) and three non-EU members (Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland) have signed the Schengen agreement. However, only 15 countries have implemented the common border control and visa provisions.

Weight or Measure in the Freight Cost Calculation

The freight rate on export goods is often based on W/M (weight or measure), that is, based on the weight or the volume of cargo (the cube or measurement of cargo). The rate uses the comparative relation between weight and volume of cargo. A cargo that is large in relation to its weight is charged according to its total cube, while a cargo that is heavy in relation to its size is charged according to its gross weight.

In general, light cargo is charged based on measure, while heavy cargo based on weight.

What a striking combination!

Public Holiday in Singapore - Friday November, 27th 2009

Hari Raya Haji, or the "Pilgrimage Festival", marks the end of a Muslim's pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, it commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail in an act of obedience to God. In Singapore, Hari Raya Haji is a public holiday.

background

Hari Raya Haji (Aidil Adha) falls on 10 Zulhijjah, the 10th day of the 12th month of the Muslim calendar. The Muslim calendar, with the months alternating between 29 and 30 days, is 11 days shorter than the 365-day Gregorian calendar.

Celebration

Friday November, 27th 2009

Did you know?

Male volunteers at mosques or Muslim institutions usually perform the sacrificial slaughtering after the Hari Raya Haji congregational prayers. This sacrificial slaughtering, also known as korban, is a voluntary act. Sheep, goats and cows are ritually slaughtered as sacrifice. The meat is then distributed to the community, neighbours and relatives, with special attention to the needy and poor, as a reminder to share one's wealth with others. Muslim Singaporeans are increasingly doing korban with Muslim associations and mosques, locally and abroad. During the sacrifice, prayers are uttered and the sheep's throat is slit with razor-sharp knives. This act must be done with confidence and quickly, so as to minimise the animal's suffering. This is in accordance with Islamic law, where halal does not literally mean that the food contains neither pork nor lard, but it has to be prepared properly according to Islamic requirements.

Our Rotterdam office will be closed on Friday April 30th to celebrate Queen's Beatrix birthday

Long Live the Queen!

Queen's day, or Koninginnedag as we call it, is a national holiday in the Netherlands. On this day we celebrate the birthday of the Queen of the Netherlands. Although it's original the birthday of Queen Juliana (the mother of Queen Beatrix), not of Queen Beatrix, we celebrate her birthday on 30 April. Our Queen Beatrix birthday is really on the 31th January, but the winter isn't the time to party outside.

Orange Craze

Queen's Day is also a typical occasion for the world-famous Orange Craze. On this day most of the people wear orange clothing and creative orange accessories. The colour orange is a ubiquitous sight, referring to the name of our royal family, the House of Orange. Everywhere in the city you'll see orange banners, orange colored foods and drinks.

Volcanic ash halts much of Northern Europe air travel

Ash clouds from Icelandic volcano continued to hang over European skies shutting down major airport hubs like Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London and Paris. Airport officials said that they did not know when the skies over aviation's most congested airspace in Europe could be safe again.

The ash clouds disrupted hundreds of flights, almost all trans-atlantic flights were affected as also flights between Asia and Europe. Most of the London and European bound flights were running indefinitely late, as also flights to US and Canada, which fly through Europe.

Britain extended a ban on all non-emergency flights over its airspace till 1800 hrs GMT and flights at Frankfurt Airport, the biggest in Germany were halted indefinitely. France also shut down as many as twenty four airports. Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Lithuania and Belgium also closed their airspace.

Did you know?

This was the biggest flight disruption since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Wednesday, June 16th

The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month of the Chinese calendar. Chinese call this day as Duan-Wu. Duan means beginning. Wu means Horse month in the Chinese calender.

The Horse month usually begins on June 5th or June 6th in the Gregorian calendar. That means Dragon Boat Festival should be held in June, unless that year has Leap Month in the Chinese lunar calendar.

Who celebrates?

China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau as well as countries with significant Chinese populations, such as in Singapore and malaysia.

Did you know?

In China, the Dragon Boat Festival memorializes the Chinese patriotic poet Chiu Yuan (340 BC-278 BC or 343-290 B.C.), who committed suicide by jumping into the river after tying himself with big rock on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. Chiu Yuan was the number one advisor of the kingdom of Chu.

But people were jealous his position and said lots of bad words on his back. The king wouldn't take his advice in the end and was killed by the enemy of neighbor kingdom. The new king continued to enjoy the luxury life and didn't like Chiu Yuan either. Later, Chiu Yuan was exiled. He wrote many patriotic poem after then. Chiu Yuan met a fisherman, who never cared about the country and quite satisfied his life.

Chiu Yuan thought that the king wouldn't run the country, people only cared about themselves, nobody cared the future of the country and to live is meaningless. So he killed himself by drowning himself in the river. Many fishermen tried to rescue him, but the body is never found. Fishermen worried about fish would eat his body. So they threw food into the river to feed the fish. Plus, they tried to scare fish away by splashing the water with their paddles and beating the drums on the long narrow boats.

Then the dragon was added into the story. Fishermen believed there was a water-dragon under the river. One man poured down a big jar of strong yellow wine (made of rice). Later, a drunken dragon-like fish floated on the river. One piece of Chiu Yuan's clothing was found in-between the whisker of the water-dragon.

    A spiritual plunge after Christmas

    When do we celebrate?

Our Greek office will be closed on Thursday January 6th to celebrate Epiphany.

    What do we celebrate?

On 6 January, Christmas officially comes to an end. In Greece, the waters at Piraeus, Athens' ancient port, and the vessels that use them are blessed in a modern observance that sees a priest hurling a large crucifix into the sea.

Once thrown, only the brave face the cold waters and compete to retrieve it. The winner is awarded with good luck for the year ahead. After the diving, fishermen bring their boats to be blessed.
